Since 2024, VTG has been working with research partners on the project Design Methodology for Lightweight-Optimised Flexible Superstructures for Rail Freight Transport (ALFA SGV). The goal is to develop an innovative methodology for designing lightweight, flexible superstructures for rail freight applications.

The project has now been presented to an international expert audience at the International Rail Vehicle Conference in Dresden – and in a particularly noteworthy setting: for the first time, VTG was selected to be represented with a joint technical paper at this renowned conference. This recognition highlights the innovative strength and technical expertise of our team.

2024

Since 2024, VTG has been working with research partners.

The focus is not on a single superstructure, but on a systematic, standards-compliant methodology that enables customer-specific transport containers to be designed to be both lightweight and operationally robust. The aim is to avoid over‑engineering, reduce material usage (by up to 30 percent), and attract new market participants to rail.

Presentation of the project to an international expert audience in Dresden

A key approach is the functional separation between freight wagon and loading unit – similar to the container principle. Exchangeable, application-specific superstructures create new flexibility and open up additional opportunities.

The methodology covers the entire lifecycle – from requirements analysis to static and dynamic strength verification through to maintenance planning. The result is a practical guide for economical and safe lightweight solutions in rail freight transport.

„The conference in Dresden clearly showed how strong the interest in practical lightweight solutions for rail freight transport is. We are particularly pleased that VTG was represented with its own technical contribution for the first time.”
Kai Röbbecke (Senior Project Manager)

Participation in this prestigious conference marks an important step for VTG. ALFA‑SGV demonstrates that we not only develop innovation, but also position it on the scientific stage – actively helping to shape the future of rail freight transport.
