The daycare center in Hamburg had been looking for a suitable solution to the problem for a long time. But there was one big challenge, as renters – including the daycare center – aren’t allowed to make any structural changes to the building.
Carsten Schreiber, a social education specialist at VTG RailTrain, took this as an incentive to design a bicycle stand that could be made by the apprentices of the program. At the same time, SAGA, the building’s owner, was contacted to obtain permission for the bike rack to be permanently installed. When this approval was granted at the end of August 2024, the project had the green light to be launched.
Jolina Ferreira, an aspiring construction mechanic in her third year of training, prepared a technical drawing based on Carsten’s design in addition to identifying and ordering the needed materials. All the individual parts were then manufactured by the apprentices before being assembled. In this process, all the skills required of a construction mechanic were put to use – from sawing and drilling to cutting and welding.
The big day finally arrived on August 28: Carsten, Deha Mehmet Koc and Daniel Kosachew – both of whom are also in the third year of their apprenticeship – were able to start building the bike rack.
Another first on this day was the initial use of the new VTG RailTrain Crafter van! Going forward, in addition to enabling the safe transportation of bulky materials, the Crafter van will also contain everything that’s needed on site – and be an unmistakable eye-catcher thanks to its unique RailTrain markings.
The results have been impressive! Up to eight bicycles can now be parked safely and tidily at the daycare center. Director Monika Kesy and everyone else at the Kinderhaus Bahrenfeld is thrilled about the new bicycle stand. And the RailTrain apprentices can be proud of having successfully tackled their challenge!
