With the successful approval of the r2L solution for T3000 pocket wagons, at least one train per week from Italy to Germany will now be fully utilized. If demand from additional trailer customers increases, even two trains per week could be filled in the future.

Simple idea, big impact

Together with our long-standing partner VEGA International we developed a solution that is now considered one of the most important levers for shifting freight to rail: r2L – roadrailLink. The concept is as simple as it is ingenious: instead of modifying the trailer, it is placed on an r2L platform or r2L basket, which makes it crane‑compatible. This allows almost any standard semi‑trailer to be loaded onto a double pocket wagon without ramps, additional infrastructure and without technical modifications.

Transshipment takes only a few minutes

The r2L technology is designed for efficiency. Laser measurement ensures precise positioning and terminal cranes or reach stackers handle the lifting. The result is a fast, safe, and smooth transshipment process that conserves terminal space and simplifies operations.

What r2L means for our customers

For our customers r2L delivers immediate and tangible benefits. Especially in terms of sustainability, the solution sets new standards: using a single r2L basket can save up to 2,200 tons of CO₂ per year without any conversion of the existing trailer fleet. With these climate‑friendly transports, customers make a direct contribution to achieving European climate targets.

2,200

Tons of CO₂ savings – this corresponds to roughly the driving distance of 11 to 13 million kilometers with a passenger car.

Shifting Transport from Road to Rail

Excellent performance

In 2022, VTG and VEGA won the “German Transport Transition Award” for the r2L solution. More information here: VTG wins “German Transport Transition Award”
R2L is not just a technological product but also a strategic step: we are opening combined transport to entirely new market segments, strengthening our role as a provider of sustainable logistics solutions and actively supporting our customers in decarbonizing their supply chains.

Demand for combined transport solutions is rising and r2L is a central building block in meeting that demand. With every additional trailer that reaches the rails thanks to our technology, climate‑friendly freight transport moves one step closer.
